The year 2019 chewed me up and spit me out like a piece of fat on a T-bone steak. Am I being dramatic? Slightly. Was 2019 difficult? Yes. Am I thankful for every trial I was forced to walk through? Absolutely. In the last year I learned that I am capable of anything I set my mind to.

If I were to give the year 2019 a word, it would be "work". Why? Because that's about all I did this year. I worked on my education, worked on my internships, worked on my confidence, worked on my creation skills, worked on my outlook on life- HONEY I WORKED. There really isn't something that I didn't work on in the last year, and I am really quite proud of that. Many times I felt so overwhelmed- I just wanted to throw in the towel. Then, I finally laid down after one fo many sixty(plus)-hour work weeks and got the email that I kept a 3.0 GPA for the semester. I could finally close my eyes and sleep peacefully, to wake up the next day and begin the crazy week all over again.

The last 365 days were testimonial that your skills will get you where you need to be. “When you really want something, you will find a way. When you don’t really want something, you’ll find an excuse.” (Rachel Hollis, Girl Wash Your Face) I began this year by applying for internships and jobs that I will be totally honest in admitting, I was nowhere near qualified for. However, I refused to accept that. I absolutely refused to admit defeat when there was something in front of me that I wanted, and knew I would be successful at. I decided to move forward into these interviews by portraying the best version of myself. By letting each supervisor know I was the girl for the job, and no other prospect would measure up to what I was bringing to the table. The results? I landed every. single. one. The confidence I had in myself, my skills, education, and experience were enough to convince them that I was more than capable for the job.

Failure was inevitable, but it's something I decide not to dwell on. For the sake of being transparent though, I would like to share that with you- because we're all human here. Sometimes, I didn't always manage my time properly. Several assignments for school were missed, outings with friends were skipped, and there were plenty of sleepless nights wondering if I remembered to send a client email or not. Wanna know what gets me through the day? Reminiscing when Tina Fey said, “THERE ARE NO MISTAKES, only opportunities.” (Bossypants)

New Year resolutions aren't really my thing. Being honest? They aren't my thing because I literally never follow through with them. I've never been one of those, "this year I'll eat better, go to the gym, clean the house more," blah, blah, blah type of people. It just isn't me, ya know? Rather than making such pinpointed resolutions, I want to set goals for 2020.

In the next year, I aim to...

  • become more intentional with my free time

  • be a better friend

  • write more

  • complain less

  • stop spending so much money

In the new year, I'm sure plenty of things will happen that I will be grateful for. I look forward to finally finishing my Bachelor's degree, beginning my career, and hopefully learning how to successfully cook hamburgers thoroughly. Although, Mindy Kaling tells us, “I think that's the lesson of this story: you never know what is going to happen.” (Why Not Me?)
