What Forty-Hour Work Week?

Writer's picture: morgmorg

The other day I overheard someone say, “Your generation is just so lazy. You won’t even complete a 40-hour work week because it’s simply too hard for you.”

UH excuse me? Who do you think you are to make assumptions on my work ethic, based solely on my age?

For those of you that are unaware of what I do for a living- I create content for clients. That content can be a very wide variety of what might be: blogs, social media, photography, news releases, email newsletters, website text, and more. I also attend networking events and educational seminars as much as possible, because people need to know who I am and my education needs to constantly be continued. Plus if my client is hosting something, it’s probably key for their content creator/public relations rep to be there.

That being said, there’s a lot to be a “content creator”. However, I love the talents I was blessed with and wouldn’t change it for the world.

A normal workday for me- doesn’t exist. Which is why I’m so steamed over someone calling me “lazy”. Yesterday, I was bright eyed and typing at the office at nine a.m. I spent my day writing five blogs, scheduling interviews for client stories, creating graphics for social media in regards to Christmas, and somehow finding time for lunch. Once the clock hit five, we had to scurry to a seminar where we learned how to “Eat the Frog”, and had a wonderful dinner catered to us. When that concluded at seven, I finally got home at seven-thirty to finish a German Cinema final and wind down for bed.

JUST KIDDING- around twelve-thirty I got an idea for a client story and I had to write it down. If I sleep on an idea, I will absolutely lose it. That’s the problem with being a creator… you never know when the creation aspect of your brain is going to decide to work or not. Therefore, when duty calls… I answer.

Some workdays, like yesterday, I put in 13 hours of work. I wasn’t able to actually go to sleep until almost three a.m.

It’s so important for you (BABY BOOMERS… listen- if you’re going to call me out, I’m throwing it right back at ya) to realize that careers are changing and not everyone has the blessing to punch in at eight and out at five, and then call it a day. I love my career, I love my job, I love my crazy work schedule, and all that it entails. But stop harping on me, and my generation, for being so against your strict work schedule. It isn’t working anymore!
